Abstract

The paper addresses the problem of replacing steel field pipelines with polymer composite material (PCM) analogues for Arctic and sub-Arctic oil field conditions. Based on a systematic literature review, data on the mechanical properties of glass-reinforced plastics (GFRP/GRE) and thermoplastic composite pipes (TCP) at temperatures down to −60 °C are systematised. The key advantage of PCMs over carbon steels is the complete absence of a ductile-to-brittle transition, which makes them especially valuable in Arctic environments. A comparative analysis is carried out by corrosion resistance, weight, thermal conductivity, and life-cycle cost (LCC) criteria: estimates indicate cost savings of 30–52% over a 30-year horizon. Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems based on FBG sensors, acoustic emission, and distributed fibre-optic sensing are reviewed. An analysis of Russian and international regulatory frameworks reveals that no specialised standard for PCM pipelines in Arctic conditions currently exists worldwide. Three critical research gaps requiring priority attention are identified
